Winter Wellness – Looking After Our Immune Systems

As we move into winter, the short days, poor weather and increase in winter illnesses can put our immune systems under greater pressure than usual.

Add into that the demands of a busy festive season and it is perhaps not surprising that we can find ourselves either unwell, or feeling below our best.

There is good news though, there are some simple things that we can do to help support our immune systems through this trickier season of the year.

Looking after both your mind and body can help your immune system stay strong and function well.

Three of the key factors in maintaining a healthy immune system are;

  • Good mental health
  • A good and varied diet
  • Physical exercise

Our mental health is one of the most important factors in keeping us well. We all have elements of pressure and stress in our lives, but when stress becomes sustained it can impact our health and wellbeing.

Our stress response prepares our body to deal with whatever threat it perceives we may be under. This can trigger a range of physical effects in response, commonly described as fight, flight or freeze.

If you feel that stress maybe a factor, then perhaps try a few simple things to reduce your stress levels such as; taking some simple and regular exercise, developing a good sleep routine by turning of electronic devices and relaxing before bed, limiting stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine, trying a relaxing therapy or meditation.

Diet plays a key part in our immune system as nutrients we take in build and maintain our immune system. Having a varied diet is key to getting the range of vitamins and minerals needed. Including plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet is a good way to achieve this.

Maintaining hydration is equally important for your body to function effectively, so include some water along with your usual drinks. Try to reduce caffeine and sugar intake, as these can cause highs and lows in our bodies which can make us feel more tired once the initial rush is past.

Finally, taking some exercise can have huge benefits. Exercise impacts our cardio vascular system, increases blood flow and oxygenation and gets us into natural light when taken outside. Natural light is really important for our mental wellbeing and maintaining our natural body rhythms that support good sleep.

Exercise doesn’t need to be competitive, complex or physically punishing. Simple forms of exercise such as walking are just as good.
